Who we are
Family and farmhouse

We are a family who chose to keep a centuries-old farmhouse alive, transforming its former winery into a restaurant and, later, into a small seven-room hotel. We take care of every detail with a warm, personal touch, so you feel right at home and experience the charm of the Penedès from within.

quiernes somos .avif

We are a family who decided to continue the life of a 15th-century farmhouse inherited from our ancestors, transforming what was once a winery into a restaurant. The restaurant has now been running for 30 years.

In 2016, we converted part of the house into a seven-room hotel, continuing the story of the farmhouse, which you can read more about below.
Always, directly or indirectly, rooted in hospitality, we strive to offer you the best possible service.

Together with our team — thanks to whom we can carry on part of the history of our farmhouse.

Always at your service.

Our story
How it all began

Before becoming what it is today, this restaurant was a family dream. We’ll tell you, in our own words, how this story began and the journey we’ve taken along the way.

History
Since the 13th century

Can Panyella is a listed building of local cultural interest.

Originally, it was a farmhouse made up of three adjoining rectangular buildings with pitched roofs: the living quarters, the livestock area and the winery.

The living quarters and the livestock building date back to the 15th century. They consisted of a ground floor and an upper floor, with an arched doorway, stone-framed windows, a large entrance hall and a spacious central room distributing the upper bedrooms.

The winery building, single-storey and very spacious, once held 60 barrels and three fermentation vats.

Beside it was a threshing floor with a very simple, rustic shelter.

There was also a traditional open hearth with benches, of which only a charming external chimney remains today.

From documents preserved at Mas Almez in Vallirana, former owners of the house, we know that in the late 18th century (around 1763), the heiress of Can Panyella, Maria Panyella i Bellagarda, married one of the Romagosa heirs of Almez.

The oldest known document is a parchment from 1230 recording the sale of a piece of land at the Ricolf estate.

The transition from the Ricolf family to the Pujol family is still unclear.

In 1337, Pere Pujol of the Ricolf farmhouse is mentioned, along with his wife Elisenda and one of their daughters, Guillema.

In 1376, Guerava Pujol, daughter of Pere Pujol and widow of Guillem Codorniu (who made his will in 1367, naming Pere Codorniu as heir), made a donation.

The Codorniu family continued until Angelina Codorniu, who signed marriage agreements in 1436 with Ponç Penyella of Begues, son of Guillem and Dulce.

In 1453, Antoni Bertran, lord of Gelida, granted the Martí and Ricolf estates to the married couple Angelina Codorniu (owner) and Ponç Penyella.

The Penyella family line continued until the 18th century, when Maria Penyella i Bellagarda married Josep Romegosa i Muntaner, heir to Almez (Vallirana).

The father of the last heiress, Pau Penyella, acknowledged the Martí farmhouse to the lords of Gelida in 1736. The Romegosa family then followed.

The Anguela family, originally from Alió (Alt Camp), were the tenant farmers (masovers) who later acquired the property from the Romegosa family in the 20th century.

Over time, the Anguela family gradually transformed the house, working the vineyards, fruit trees and farm animals. They also provided meals, dinners and rooms to visitors, such as workers involved in building the AP-7 motorway and those employed in early local industries.

In 1992, they left behind farming activities and converted the former winery into a restaurant, which remains in operation today.

In 2016, another part of the house was transformed into a seven-room hotel, now run by the Anguela Garcia and López families.
